Incontinence at Home: Cleaning Is Important — But Protecting the Skin Matters Most
Why a simple wipe is not enough, and how to protect your loved one’s skin at every change.
It’s a topic that isn’t talked about much, often because it can feel a little uncomfortable. Yet incontinence affects many older adults and people with reduced independence — and it is often family caregivers who manage it, day after day, quietly.
In our previous article, we looked at how to provide a complete wash without water. Today, we’re going one step further on an issue many people discover too late: when it comes to incontinence, the real challenge is not just cleanliness. It’s skin health.
The hidden problem: incontinence-associated dermatitis
When the skin remains in prolonged contact with urine or stool, it can become irritated, red and eventually damaged.
This is known as incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD): a common skin inflammation that can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful — and, if neglected, may increase the risk of pressure sores.
The problem is that frequent cleaning can seem like the right thing to do. But cleaning without protecting the skin, or using unsuitable products, can sometimes make things worse:
- ordinary wipes often contain alcohol or fragrances that can irritate the skin;
- repeated rubbing weakens skin that is already sensitive;
- water and soap can dry out the skin and remove its natural protective barrier.
The right approach involves two steps: clean gently, then protect the skin barrier. At every change.
The 3-step method
1. Remove and clean gently
Remove the soiled protection. Clean the area from front to back, especially for women to help prevent contamination, without rubbing.
A soft, pre-moistened washcloth or wipe that does not require rinsing can clean effectively without irritating the skin.
For an initial cleanse, Swash Perineum cleansing wipes or Swash dry washcloths are ideal.
2. Let the skin dry
There is no need to rub the skin dry. Let it air dry for a few seconds.
If moisture remains in skin folds, gently pat the area dry.
3. Protect
This is the step that is most often forgotten — and one of the most important.
Apply a product that creates a protective film between the skin and moisture, helping to prevent irritation before it develops.
Protecting the skin without suffocating it: the Swash Perineum range
Swash has developed a standardized incontinence care range designed to help prevent IAD or manage it at an early stage — the same type of care used in healthcare facilities.
Swash Perineum (3-in-1)
Pre-moistened washcloths or wipes infused with a skin protectant containing 3% dimethicone.
This silicone-based formula leaves a light protective film on the skin, helping to protect it from external moisture.
Importantly, the film is non-occlusive, allowing the skin to breathe.
Swash Perineum+ (4-in-1)
All the benefits of the 3-in-1 formula, plus Trixotric® technology: a hydrogel formulation combining hyaluronic acid, hydrogel and natural clay to create a protective layer while still allowing the skin to breathe.
It is particularly suitable when the skin is already fragile and needs enhanced care.
In both cases, the products allow you to clean and protect in one step, with no rinsing and no transfer, while preserving your loved one’s dignity.
When to consult a healthcare professional
These products are an excellent form of everyday prevention, but they do not replace professional medical advice.
Speak with a nurse, doctor or pharmacist if you notice:
- redness that persists or spreads despite care;
- skin that is peeling, oozing or cracking;
- an open wound — in this case, do not apply the products directly to it;
- pain, warmth or an unusual odour.
Damaged skin is much easier to manage when it is identified early.
Key takeaway
When dealing with incontinence, simply thinking “I need to clean” is not enough.
The winning combination is gentle cleansing + skin protection, at every change.
This helps prevent irritation, protects your loved one’s comfort — and can help avoid unnecessary complications.
